Curriculum Samples
The lessons within each grade levels are grouped according to the following content areas, or what we have termed “standards” in this curriculum:
1) American Indian traditional land values
2) American Indian land tenure history
3) Contemporary American Indian land issues
4) Building a positive future for Indian communities through the land use and stewardship
Each individual lesson within these standards addresses at least one “core” classroom subject, such as history, the language arts, cultural arts, natural sciences, and civics and government (social studies). Each lesson includes a rationale and other background information for the lesson, several possible student activities, and a list of recommended resources. In addition, each individual lesson is characterized by a specific “achievement goal” that will help you assess the learning outcomes of your students.
This curriculum, especially for grades 6 – 12, relies heavily upon the internet as a source of lesson content due to the fact that a comprehensive textbook on Indian land tenure for primary school students has not yet been published. In addition, this curriculum also relies on several books commonly found in public school libraries.
The Indian Land Tenure Foundation will be making grants to schools that wish to implement the curriculum but may not have the resources to purchase copies of these books or make copies of internet pages for students. For more information on these grants, please visit the Indian Land Tenure Foundation website at www.indianlandtenure.org.
K-2, Standard 1, Lesson 3 3-5, Standard 2, Lesson 2
6-8, Standard 3, Lesson 4 9-12, Standard 4, Lesson 1
As directed by the Indian land tenure community which created ILTF, the foundation initiated development of curriculum designed for Head Start, K-12, and college students. The purpose of the curriculum is to intellectually reconnect students to the land and raise their awareness of the land’s importance to their past, present, and future. The curriculum is freely available on this site in PDF and HTML format.
Education Strategy: Educate every Indian landowner about Indian land tenure issues so that knowledge becomes power when decisions to create positive futures are made.
